Begin with the year you actually had

Look at an experience you really had without filling the gaps in a yearly story.

Week 1A · 1 of 8 · 2 min read

You can begin the next chapter with an experience you actually had. It might be something you tried this morning, a question you returned to, or a small change in how you used an ordinary afternoon.

You do not need a full year of notes. There is no missing chapter to invent before you can reflect. Start with a manageable moment and keep its description close to what happened.

One question

What experience can I honestly begin with today?

One small practice

Choose a manageable experience from any part of the year, including today. Write what you did or noticed in a factual sentence. Leave out the part about what it ought to mean.

Finish: "An experience I actually had was ____." You can stop there. No complete annual account or explanation of the gaps in your notes is required.

Use paper or a private note. Nothing needs to be submitted.

Your note stays in this browser.

Questions people ask

Can I begin with something from today?

Yes. The practice starts with an experience you actually have, so a moment from today is enough. You do not need an earlier notebook, a completed year of reflections, or a long history with the site.

What if most of the year is hard to summarize?

You can leave the larger summary aside and choose a manageable moment. This page does not ask you to reconstruct the year. Keep the sentence factual and skip any experience you would rather not revisit right now.
