Your place is larger than a useful role

Notice what you value about yourself outside a role you fill for other people.

Week 4A · 7 of 8 · 2 min read

You may often be the person who organizes, explains, listens, or remembers. That can be part of what happens in your relationships without being the whole description of you. This reflection leaves the useful role to one side.

You can name a quality you value in an ordinary moment of your own. The note does not assess a relationship or ask anyone to treat you differently. It gives attention to something about you beyond a task you provide.

One question

What do I value about myself apart from a role I fill in an interaction?

One small practice

Recall an ordinary moment of your own, such as reading, making, or noticing something interesting. Name a quality you value there without connecting it to how useful it makes you to another person.

Write: "A quality I can recognize outside my role is ____." You can stop after the sentence. No proof, disclosure, or change in a relationship is required.

Use paper or a private note. Nothing needs to be submitted.

Questions people ask

Do I need to stop filling the useful role?

This practice does not prescribe a change to your role. It asks you to describe a quality outside it. You can keep the note separate from decisions about what you do for others or what happens in a relationship.

Can the quality be something quiet or private?

Yes. Curiosity in a private moment or attention to a small detail can fit. The quality does not need to be visible to someone else. Choose a plain description rather than a word you would need to demonstrate.
