Name the action, not the compliment

A short practice for recognizing an everyday ability.

Week 1B · The Talents collection

"I'm good at things" can feel too broad. "It was nothing" can close the subject before you have looked at it.

Try a description instead.

One question

What, specifically, did I do in a recent moment that went reasonably well?

One small practice

Write one factual sentence beginning, "I helped by ____." Then underline the action in your sentence.

You might see explaining, arranging, noticing, adapting, welcoming, or something different. Use the word that fits the event, not the most impressive word.

Complete one more line: "This is an ability I used." You are describing what happened, not giving yourself a lifetime rating.

Use paper or a private note. Nothing needs to be submitted.

Give this practice a place in your week.

Questions people ask

How do I know what my talents are if nothing feels special?

Begin with one ordinary action: something you noticed, explained, arranged, made, or listened to. You do not have to decide whether it is exceptional to describe what you did.

What if I'm good at something but don't enjoy it?

An ability and a preference can be different. You can recognize what you bring without promising to use it more often or making it another responsibility.
